Having had enough of this serious and personal discussion, Chris moved on to other light-hearted topics. Grace was surprised by how honest and straightforward he was, and more surprised by just how disarmed she felt in the presence of this man - supposedly her boss.

“Back to my place for a night cap?” he asked, naturally. A jolt ran through her. What should she do?

“Um, I need to use the bathroom. Can you hold on a second?” she asked, rushing off to the facilities as delicately as she could. Once safely in a stall, she dialed Tiffany.

“Hey, honey. How’s that date going?”

“Tiff, he wants me to go home with him,” Grace blabbed as soon as Tiffany was done saying ‘hello’. She made no mention of who her date was as she wasn’t sure she wanted it known she was dating her boss.

“Well, is he cute?” Tiffany asked?

“I mean, yeah. He is.”

“And you like him?”

“Yeah. I think so,” Grace said, realizing it was true.

“Then what is there to think about? You don’t have to sleep with him, but if you want to go home with him, go home with him.”

She did want to go home with him. If she were honest with herself that was part of the reason she had taken a cab. But now that she was faced with the critical decision, she wanted to bury her head and the sand and hide. After getting off of the phone with Tiffany, she took a couple of deep breaths and headed back outside. She was relieved to find that Chris was still there. Grace was half sure he would be gone.

“Hey,” he said, upon seeing her. “I was getting worried.”

“Sorry,” she said. “I think I just got a little dizzy. Maybe I could get a glass of water at your place?” she said.

Chris smiled.

“Sure,” he said.

The valet brought his car around, and Chris opened the passenger side door for Grace, bowing slightly to mock his own formality. Grace laughed. While it was clear that Chris had been born with a silver spoon, it was clear that he had gone to the trouble of spending some time away from it.

As they sped through the streets, Grace felt other questions bubble to the surface of her mind. She hadn’t wanted to pry too much into his past, but decided that if she was going back to his place she was past all sense of impropriety.

“So…What exactly were you up to after you graduated? I mean, you know, before you came back to the firm?”

Chris turned a corner rather sharply. He didn’t seem to be a very good driver. Grace suspected he was more used to being driven around either by limo or cab, but didn’t say anything. He was determined to prove he could survive outside of his rich bubble, and Grace thought that was admirable. Besides, if she told him she thought it was cute, he might take it the wrong way.

“A better question is, what didn’t I do,” he finally said at a red light.
